It is a non-religious society of men (there are also Lodges for the ladies) who enjoy regular companionship, a chance to participate In our meetings, make new friends and to generally improve themselves.
The Meeting
We tend to meet in the bar in our Masonic Centre at around 5:30 for a social chat before going into our freemasons only meeting at 6pm. The meeting is usually to introduce (initiate) someone into freemasonry or to advance a freemason along his Masonic journey. This consist of a ceremony where the candidate is escorted around the lodge room. The meeting also has all the usual minutes, propositions etc and we finally parade out for a meal in our dining room after a short visit to the bar. At Baring Lodge we have a three course meal and this is interspersed with informal and formal toasts - and the raffle! We are usually finished by 10pm.
So what do we get out of freemasonry? This is an individual thing and is likely to change as you progress along your Masonic journey. You may be fascinated to be involved in the same ceremonies which were performed in Baring Lodge over 120 years ago; become proficient in public speaking, enjoy the banter in the dining room, coming along to a family Sunday lunch or our Dinner Dances. And be pleased to be part of a charitable organization that helps both locally and around the world!

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations. We are a secular society open to men of any race, religion, political belief or status.
Based upon the traditions of medieval stonemasons who built our castles and cathedrals, today we still use the stonemason’s tools as symbols of our aim to ‘build’ better men and a better world for everyone, whatever their background.
As Freemasons, we use four principles to help define our path through life: Integrity, Friendship, Respect and Service. In our present uncertain times, these principles are as important today as they have ever been.
